Craft Distillery

Client Private
Location Ireland
Size c. 700sq.m
Status Concept Design

Plus Architecture were asked to develop a design concept for a new craft distillery incorporating manufacture of the product and a destination visitor experience.

The new distillery is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, on a wooded hillside, facing south. The ambition behind the project is to embed the building amongst the natural landscape with a minimum of tree removal and a sensitive approach to carparking and other infrastructure. The building is designed around a sequential visitor experience highlighting every aspect of the distillation and production processes; from the foraging of herbs and botanicals in the adjacent forest, to the bottling and cooperage areas.

The building is embedded into the hillside on the lower level but seeks to rise up into the treetops at the upper level where the visitor's experience culminates in a tasting area and bar.

The language of the building is based on providing a structural grid sitting on a modelled ground plane with an irregular roof profile draped over the top.

The building seeks to be contextual and appropriate to the natural landscape, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside to allow the visitor feel part of the beautiful landscape.

We have recently completed a refurbishment and mod We have recently completed a refurbishment and modernisation of a Protected Structure in Dublin city centre.
No. 5 Dame lane was constructed circa 1906 to designs by Bachelor & Hicks Architects. The 4-storey over basement building was constructed as an extension to the earlier Hely Printworks Building and is included in the Record of Protected Structures on account of the early use of the Hennebique reinforced concrete construction system. Plus Architecture were engaged to refurbish the building to current office standards including the insertion of an entirely new stair, lift and toilet core.

The development contains eight apartments over four floors, with a basement providing parking below. Each apartment is dual aspect with views out over the Grand Canal. Some beautiful details in there, including the curved glass to the rear bedroom and the west facing windows to capture the evening light, beautifully modelled by Val.
